Indie Andaluz – Mix106 FM Wednesday 11 January 2017

Ident Mix106This edition of Indie Andaluz was first broadcast on Mix106 FM on Wednesday 11 January 2017.

On this week’s show we’ve got a whole bunch of great tracks from the four corners of southern Spain. We’ve got soul, boy have we got soul, we’ve got reggae, we’ve got rock, we’ve got a touch of folk, and much more, but to kick off the music tonight, to borrow a phrase from Craig Charles, we have a whole trunk of funk starting with Malaga funksters Futu Matano and their track Costa del Sol.

Listen again will be available from Saturday 14 January

The City of Granada has a thriving music scene and unlike many local authorities, rather than persecute its music venues it promotes them, even designating Granada ‘The City of Rock’.

This enlightened view which includes funding for music events, contests etc., has helped the musicians of Granada to thrive. One such band is the funk jazz six piece Funkdacion and here they are performing All Right off of their 2007 album Fun People

2 Funkdacion – All Right – 4:39

Well it’s that time of the show when we make a musical excursion into Gibraltar and take a look at some of the bands doing great things over there. Gibraltar has recently celebrated the Gibraltar Music Festival and among the international performers, such as Stereophonics, Jess Glynne, Bryan Ferry and so on, the event also gives Gibraltar’s local talent the chance to perform on a big stage. One such band are the rock band Dead City Radio, fronted by James Culatto and featuring former Orange Peel bassist Daniel Ghio, Robin Batchelor on lead and Michael Gomez on drums, who opened Day 1 on the Gibtelecom stage. A great rock band, they are also happy to perform this side of the border including at Louie Louie’s in Estepona where I caught up with them last Friday. Here are Dead City Radio and High on Scars…

5 Dead City Radio – High On Scars – 3:10

I’ve got to give a big shout out to David Diaz over at the Gibraltar Live Music Society for giving me the heads up on this next band. Angelwings was founded in April 2013 out of a group of experienced musicians that had been on the local music scene for some time, playing in different bands and a wide variety of musical genres.

Angelwings perform a subgenre of rock popular in Scandinavia known as Symphonic Metal. Last year Angelwings supported heavy metal legends Saxon at the “Hard n Heavy” festival in Gibraltar as well as performing at last year’s Gibraltar Music Festival.

Here is Angelwings and the track The Fallen off of their forthcoming debut album The Edge of Innocence.

6 Angelwings – The Fallen – 5:12

Another band doing great things over on the Rock and beyond is Jetstream a four piece band whose original tracks cover a variety of genres from pop to rock and everything in between. Another regular at the Gibraltar Music Festival this next track is called Chinatown from the 2014 EP “Piece of the Puzzle”

Hollie April is another Gibraltar talent who have honed their skills and education in the UK, in Hollie’s case at Leeds college of music. Having graduated she is now doing great things and Hollie and her band, appropriately named ‘April’, were over recently for the Gibraltar Music Festival where they put on a great performance to delight the audience.

Last month we received the shocking news that the Malaga indie band Supersubmarina had been involved in a serious road accident. The lead singer and drummer sustained serious injuries but a recent press release from the band’s management stated that they were both on the road to recovery, albeit a long one. Mix106 extends its best wishes and the hope that they get well soon.

Viva Belgrado are a four-piece post-rock band from Cordoba.  After a busy summer touring later this month they will be embarking once again on a 36 date European tour but don’t worry they will be playing Malaga’s Velvet Club in mid December. In the meantime they still managed to release an album last month entitled Ulises and this track Annapurnas is from it.

Just down the road in Algeciras you can find the rock band Atavismo. Formed back in 2013 with members from such great bands as Viaje a 800, Buena Muerta and Pussyworm, the band have already attracted a loyal following and are due to release their second album in November. Mike Harding AKA Mr Maph is an international soul, gospel and R’n’B singer/songwriter, and DJ who performs either solo or with his lovely wife Simone as the duo 2True. Possibly one of the busiest musicians in Spain you can see him one day singing at a wedding in Marbella only to find him the next day laying down backing vocals at a top London recording studio.

For tonight’s show I’ve picked he track Nothing But Love performed by 2True.

16 2True – Nothing But Love – 2.53

Young talent is the future of live music and once again Andalucia shows off one of its youngest, original artists, Singer/Songwriter Chloe Lawrence. Chloe is already a gifted singer/songwriter and has been playing guitar since the age of 6! She also plays piano, banjo and mandolin!

Although not strictly Folk, in its traditional sense, Chloe’s music does feature primarily one instrument, as she prefers the purity of the song to come through with the voice playing the major role! Growing up in Casares, the influence of the area and the lifestyle have greatly influenced Chloe’s music.

This track Stupid Love Songs is from her 2012 album Little Orphan Hands.

17 Chloe Lawrence – Stupid Love Songs – 2.55

Originally from Jaen in the north of the region, Maldito Swing started out as a three piece instrumental band, before adding singer Sara López to the mix, giving them a more fully rounded sound to their brand of funk rock.

I’d like to play for you the title track from their latest EP Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing.

18 Maldito Swing – Wolf in Sheep’s Clothes – 4.13

Aguacan is a four piece flamenco rock band from Malaga. I stumbled across this band on the compilation album Malaga Es Rock Volume II. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

19 Aguacan – Las Velas – 5.10

Remember those classic rock albums of the 70s where one track would take up the whole side of an LP, well this next track from Malaga psychedelic rock band JJ Sprondel follows in that great tradition with their album Shine. I’m going to stop yapping and play as much of it as I can until the meter runs out. This is Gary Beaumont signing off until next week’s Indie Andaluz and leaving you to sit back and enjoy Shine by JJ Sprondel….
